Classical Syriac edit

Alternative forms edit

Etymology edit

From Middle Iranian, equivalent to Persian کند (kond, fetter, clog), or natively related to ܓܝܕܐ (gyādā, sinew; fiber). Compare Arabic قَيْد (qayd, fetter). Perhaps a more primitive form of ܥܩܕ (ʿqaḏ, to fixate) / عَقَدَ (ʕaqada, to tie, to bind, to fix), Hebrew עָקַד (ʿāqáḏ), Ge'ez ዐቀደ (ʿäḳädä, to tie, to bind). The form ܩܘܛܐ (qawṭā) is considered as from Classical Mandaic, but the variation is an argument for Iranian origin.
