From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dwáyṣṭi, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dwáyšti, from Proto-Indo-European *dwey- (“to fear”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈𐬱- (duuaeš-, “to hate”), Middle Persian byš (bēš, “pain, misfortune”), Ancient Greek δεινός (deinós, “terrible”), δείδω (deídō, “I fear”), δέος (déos, “fear”), Latin dīrus (“fearful”), Old Armenian երկնչիմ (erknčʻim, “to fear”).
