From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀩𑀇 (pibaï), 𑀧𑀺𑀯𑀇 (pivaï), from Sanskrit पिबति (pibati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *píbati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *píbati, from Proto-Indo-European *píbeti, from *peh₃-, whence Latin bibō, Spanish beber, and French boire. Cognate with Gujarati પીવું (pīvũ), Nepali पिउनु (piunu), Marathi पिणे (piṇe), Punjabi ਪੀਣਾ (pīṇā).
