Inherited from Sanskrit रङ्ग (raṅga), which is derived from the root रञ्ज् (rañj), from Proto-Indo-European *reg- (to dye). Alternatively borrowed from Classical Persian رنگ (rang). Cognate with Gujarati રંગ (raṅg), Marathi रंग (raṅga).
