Inherited from Prakrit 𑀆𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸 (āvattā), syncopated from earlier 𑀆𑀬𑀯𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀸 (āyavattā), from Sanskrit आतपत्रा (ātapatrā, shade; sunshade; umbrella), from आतप (ātapa, heat; sunlight) +‎ त्रा (trā, protector), with the first element from आ- (ā-) +‎ तप (tapa, heat, sun); for the second element, see त्रातृ (trātṛ).
