Learned borrowing from Old Georgian სკაროსი (sḳarosi, “parrotfish”). The new meaning is probably due to confusion with similar-sounding European words for ray—Russian скат (skat), English skate.

From Ancient Greek σκάρος (skáros). Transliterated by the translator of Homiliae in Hexaemeron.
