From Middle Georgian წუთი (c̣uti), from Old Georgian წუთი (c̣uti). For the meaning shift, compare Old Armenian րոպէ (ropē, second; moment) and Eastern Armenian րոպե (rope, minute).

The primary meaning is partially retained in the derived term წუთიერი (c̣utieri, momentary).
