Etymology edit

May be a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of (kyo, to be away from) +‎ (ri, separation).

First cited in the 和蘭字彙 (Oranda Jii, Dutch Dictionary), published in two parts in 1855 and 1858.[1]
