Etymology edit

Of native Korean origin. Related to (ga, edge).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Any more details available? This appears to be 가장 (gajang, most, itself possibly a compound of (ga, edge) + (jang, ??), perhaps similar to ideas of "extreme" or "utmost" being at the "edge" of what is possible?) + 자리 (jari, place, location). Quite interested in any further details available.”

Pronunciation edit

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈka̠(ː)d͡ʑa̠ŋd͡ʑa̠ɾi]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
