Etymology edit

From Middle High German mait, meit, contracted form of OHG maget, thus a doublet of Magd (maid). Cognates with Dutch meid, maagd, Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌲𐌰𐌸𐍃 (magaþs) and English maid.
