From Pre-Germanic *sh₂eldóm, ultimately from *séh₂ls. The closest cognate is Old Armenian աղտ (ałt) (cf. also Proto-Slavic *soldъ, Lithuanian saldus). Other cognates include Latin sāl, Latvian sāls, Proto-Slavic *solь, Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls) and Welsh halen.
