Additional definition edit

Can't this also be a Chinese surname? 24.93.190.134 03:22, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes it can. A well known example is Bai Juyi. is ranked at 79 on the 2006 List of common Chinese surnames. -- A-cai 22:23, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Etymology edit

Is the etymology (that it comes from an acorn) correct? Doesn't it come from "sun"? 71.66.97.228 04:49, 12 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Are you referring to the character etymology or the word etymology? 60.240.101.246 04:54, 12 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The character etymology (graphical significance). 71.66.97.228 05:07, 12 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Everyone seems to be saying something different regarding character etymologies.. 《字源谈趣》 thinks it resembles (polished) rice. "字源考釋" thinks it's candlelight and candlewick. Guo Moruo thinks it's a thumb, and the sense in ("first in ranking") came from this. 《汉字字源》 thinks it's pig skin being peeled.. 60.240.101.246 03:55, 13 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ancient versions of the character didn't have the dot on the top.

Topolect readings edit

@Justinrleung Could you please add more dialectal readings yourself? I don't want to attempt since there is a split by senses for Jin and Gan, e.g. 明白 for Gan --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 05:28, 13 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Atitarev: (I didn't get your ping.) I do add dialectal readings - there are just too many to work on, I guess. I've added them to this entry. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 09:09, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
