Idiom categories

I had been removing [[Category:English idioms]] and adding {{idiom}} to the beginning of the idiomatic definition(s). The template should add the note "idiomatic" to the definition and automatically add the correct category. That said, the template has changed somewhat since the last time I looked. When I have a few more moments, I'll take another look at it and make sure it's still doing what it should.

I got the old English idioms category down to only idioms beginning with O and P, so anything else has been added since then, and we should probably remind any regular contributors who are guilty not to add to this category, unless we want an ongoing job cleaning it out. It should go with Harley-Davidson, A Harley-Davidson motorcycle commonly referred to a Hog or just a Harley.

(syllabic divisions) We don't use any syllabic divisions outside of the pronunciation section. In the pronunciation section, syllabification should be done according to the pronunciation representation you are using (IPA, SAMPA primarily, AHD less often). Runaway admin?

I noticed in the logs you had a disgruntled admin user that went awry and deleted the main page and blocked every other admin as a way to show he was "going out with a bang". What was his claim against the site? I'm amazed as to wondering what would drive an established user to become an arsonist in a matter of days. Wiki Kong 03:55, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

He got too drunk and decided he wanted to be desysopped. He didn't start blocking other admins until he decided we weren't responding to his desysop request fast enough (all stewards were preoccupied at Wikimania.) Confusion about alternative spellings

Thanks a ton for all your work patrolling recent changes :) Please help me understand Template:alternate spelling of. I added an explicit category:Alternative spellings to it, so that I could look at a list of alternative spellings. You deleted that and said it was already there. I can't see it there... (I'm sure it must be there in some more subtle way, forgive me if I am a newbie:-) But here's the really confusing part.

• Of the articles which use the template and don't explicitly use "Category:Alternative spelling" by themselves, some have the category tag and some do not. For example at the time I'm writing this, behoove and seraphin use the template, but don't get the tag. But griffin and runoff get the tag, apparently from just using the template. ?_?
• Furthermore, at the time I write this, Category:Alternative spellings only actually contains words which explicitly use "Category:Alternative spellings" (whether or not they use the template).

Thanks for any help you can give in explaining this. Maybe you can even help teach me how to set it up so EVERY word (or at least every English word) that uses the template, gets put in the category.  :-) Danke!!  :-)

Cross wiki vandal issues

Hi a passing vandal fighter mentioned that you might be interested in some cross wiki vandal IPs. If you take a look at this it would be worth checking you logs to see they are blocked in a way you think is appropriate. New number template

Please have a look at {{cardinalbox}} and let me know what you think. I've devoted more than 9 hours to it today, in addition to planning the basic design well ahead of time. oops! I knew there was a reason I really liked the bot.. the process has way too many steps for a human! I'm confused...

As per Wiktionary:News for editors, {{see}} should no longer be used (apparently), and has instead been replaced by {{also}}. However, the latter is a redirect to the former (though the talk pages redirect in the proper direction).

I was going to try to update some of the transclusions, only to find that they were already done, with the exception of certain templates (that would cause the transclusions without showing up in the edit text). I reverted the lone edit I'd made so far on it out of fear of creating double redirect and breaking stuff.

There are some 42000+ uses of {see} or {also}. AutoFormat is presently fixing them as it goes about doing other things. The idea was or is to wait until about 1/2 of them are done, and then reverse the redirect. (which is probably about due now)

Templates that redirect to {see} will then be fixed; templates that use {see} can be changed to {also} at any point. Robert Ullmann 16:18, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I made a good-faith contribution to an entry (sand nigger) and you just reverted it with no explanation. The hidden comment was made because for some reason the "Discussion" page is disabled. My comment was made in an effort to stimulate further improvement in the entry and, as such, it doesn't improve the entry to remove it. Did my addition appear as vandalism? My apologies for not explaining. I reverted you because html comments on the same line as a header interfere with our formatting bots which parse entries on a regular basis. It was my intent to go find some citations in response to your request.. but I fell asleep before completing the task.. I have since entered those citations, they may be found here.

m:Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting

I do not want to come across as contumelious but please consider casting your vote for the tile logo as—besides using English—the book logo has a clear directionality of horizontal left-to-right, starkly contrasting with Arabic and Chinese, two of the six official UN languages. As such, the tile logo is the only translingual choice left and it was also elected in m:Wiktionary/logo/archive-vote-4. Linking Email to my Account

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future.
