German edit

Etymology edit

Equivalent to Old High German *wihil (wheel) +‎ Esche (ash). Since the former word (cognate with English wheel) had practically died out already in Old High German times, the compound must be very old. It is due to the fact that rowan wood was often used by wheelwrights.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

    Synonyms: Eberesche, Vogelbeere
