From Middle High German abehouwen, from Old High German abahouwan. Equivalent to ab- +‎ hauen.

  1. (transitive) to cut off (with a cutting weapon) [auxiliary haben]

  2. (intransitive) to leave abruptly, to do a runner [auxiliary sein]
