Etymology edit

From Middle High German beswern, from Old High German biswerian (to beg solemnly, ceremoniously, urgently or emphaticly). Equivalent to be- +‎ schwören. Cognate with Dutch bezweren and Middle Low German besweren (whence Swedish besvärja, Danish besværge and Norwegian Bokmål besverge).
