Inherited from Middle French bievre, from Old French bievre (beaver), from Latin beber, of Germanic or Celtic origin, both from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (beaver). Akin to Old High German bibar (German Biber (beaver)), Middle Dutch bēver (Dutch bever (beaver)), Old English befer (beaver), Old East Slavic бо́бръ (bóbrŭ). More at beaver.
