Etymology edit

Bramarbas (figure in a satire by B. Mencke (1710)) +‎ -ieren; that name was used by Johann Christoph Gottsched for the protagonist in his German translation (1741) of the comedy Jacob von Thyboe by Ludvig Holberg. bramarbasieren is first attested in Christian Fürchtegott Gellert's treatise on good taste.
