Etymology edit
Hokkien 袂/𫧃 (bōe, “cannot”) + Malay tahan (“endure, withstand, bear”); rendered in Hokkien as 袂打限 (bōe tá-hān). The equivalent expression in Malay is tak boleh tahan.
