Etymology edit
20th century, from Low German daddeln, also dadeln, tateln (“to stutter, gabble, cackle”), of onomatopoeic origin. Compare archaic German dadern, Dutch tateren, tatelen, English tattle. Originally said of the choppy sounds of slot machines.
