      From Middle Dutch denominatie or directly from Middle French denomination, from Latin denominatio "a calling by anything other than the proper name, metonymy", from denominare "to name", itself from de- "completely" + nominare "to name" (from nomen 'a name'); the religious sense was separately imported from the cognate English denomination
