Albanian edit

Pronunciation edit

Etymology 1 edit

From the development of the sense “splinter, pointed tip, awn” to “pine needles” (see Etymology 2 below) and then narrowed to the specific tree name.[1] For the semantic development, compare Icelandic barr (pine needles) from Proto-Germanic *baraz ((awn of) barley).

Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂élsnos (alder) (compare Lithuanian al̃ksnis, Latin alnus), derivative of *h₂élis- (compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian jelha, Dutch els). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Noun edit

halë f (plural hala, definite hala, definite plural halat)

  1. Austrian pine, European black pine (Pinus nigra)
