Etymology

Uncertain. Possibilities include:

• From Spanish, possibly a univerbation of Spanish qué sé yo, qué es eso, or Spanish que sea. Compare Spanish eso que and Portuguese que seja.
• From Chinese, one proposal being 家 (ke, “house”) + 事 (sū, “matters”), according to Manuel (1948). See also Hokkien 假痟 (ké-siáu, “to feign madness”).
