From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pírˀwos, from Proto-Indo-European *preh₂- (“before, in front”), ultimately from *per- (“before”).[1] Cognate with Old English fyrest (English first); Latin primus, Ancient Greek πρῶτος (prôtos) (Modern Greek πρώτος (prótos)).
