By surface analysis, treaghd (“to pierce”) +‎ -án. If the form troigheadán is oldest, though, then it may reflect troigh (“foot”) +‎ -adán as a calque of Latin pēdiculus (“louse”) mistaken for pĕdiculus (“little foot”).
