Borrowed from Old French trover, from Vulgar Latin *tropāre, a verb probably based on Classical Latin tropus. Compare French trouver.

  6. to think up
    quando il professore gli ha chiesto i compiti, è riuscito a trovare una scusa
    when the professor asked him for his homework, he was able to think up an excuse
