zurückstehen (irregular strong, third-person singular present steht zurück, past tense stand zurück, past participle zurückgestanden, past subjunctive stände zurück or stünde zurück, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. to stand further back, to stand behind
  2. to rank lower, to lag behind
  3. to exercise restraint in favor of others, to let others go first

Usage notes edit

Only the auxiliary haben is used in northern and central Germany. In southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, sein is common in the vernacular and also, alternatively, in standard usage.
