Etymology edit

From ángeles (angels), shortened from María (de los) Ángeles, a Roman Catholic epithet of the Virgin Mary as the Queen of Angels.

The city is shortened from El Pueblo de los Ángeles, after the Holy Guardian Angels (Santos Ángeles Custodios). Originally named Culiat.
