From Old Norse þefa, from Proto-Germanic *þefōną, *þebōną (to be hot), from Proto-Indo-European *tep- (warm; hot). Cognate with Old English þefian (to pant; be agitated), Old English ofþefian (to be exceedingly heated; be very hot).
