Slovak edit

Etymology edit

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ľubiti.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): [ˈʎuːbic]
  • (file)

Verb edit

ľúbiť impf

  1. to love
  2. (reflexive with sa) to like (with a dative agent, see Usage notes)
    Ten muž sa mi ľúbi.
    I like that man.

Usage notes edit

  • When used as a reflexive verb with the meaning to like, the subject of the English sentence (the agent) is translated as a dative object and the object of the English sentence as the subject. Some other reflexive verbs describing liking or disliking, e.g. páčiť (to like), nepáčiť (“to dislike”), hnusiť (to disgust), bridiť (to disgust), behave similarly.
