editFrom Proto-Indo-European *ḱelh₁- (“warm”). Cognate with Latvian silts; outside of Baltic, compare Proto-Germanic *hlēwaz (“lukewarm”),[1] Latin caleō (“to be warm”), Welsh clyd, Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćarHáts (“autumn, summer; year”).
