This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Does this trace back to Indo-European? It kind of looks like it could be a compound formation of *h₂eys- (“to wish, request, ask”) + *h₂nḗr (“vital energy; man”) - though the term doesn't seem to be mentioned in etymological dictionaries.”
