Symbol edit

˚

  1. (phonetics) released, e.g. ⟨k˚⟩ as opposed to unreleased [k̚].
  2. (phonetics) aspirated, e.g. ⟨k˚⟩ for IPA [kʰ] or [k˳].
  3. (phonetics) labialization, e.g. ⟨k˚⟩ (or more properly ⟨kᵒ⟩) for IPA [kʷ].

Usage notes edit

Meanings [1] and [2] are closely related, as consonants may be released with a puff of aspiration. In extIPA, [k˳a] indicates that voicelessness continues beyond the [k]; this is often equivalent to an aspirated [kʰ].
