Via the Katharevousa expression ἀποφώλιον (apophṓlion) τέρας (téras) (hiderous monster), a rendering of the ancient phrase ἀποφώλιον τρέφος (tréphos) by Euripides, describing the Minotaur. See ἀποφώλιος (apophṓlios)
