Ultimately from Sanskrit कर्पास (karpāsa, “cotton”), whence also Hebrew כַּרְפַּס (karpás, “fabric of cotton”), κάρπᾰσος (kárpasos, “fabric of cotton”), Latin carbasus (“fabric of cotton”).
