δισεκατομμύριο

Greek

edit

Etymology

edit

Exact calque of French billion, with the wrong bi- (bi-, twice) corresponding to δίς (dís, twice, two) and million to εκατομμύριο (ekatommýrio, million) (thus literally "two million"). The mathematically correct formation would be χίλια (chília, a thousand) + εκατομμύριο (ekatommýrio). Attested in 1871. Compare to the ancient δισχίλιος (diskhílios, two thousand) and δισμύριος (dismúrios, twenty thousand (twice ten thousand)).[1][2]
