Ancient Greek

Etymology

edit

From Proto-Indo-European *mewH-ye-, from *mewH- (to shut); cognate with Latin mutus, Sanskrit मूक (muka, mute). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *mews-ye-, from *mews- (to shut), and cognate with Palaic [script needed] (muš-, to satiate oneself), though this is semantically unconvincing.[1]
