Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Traditionally derived from σκάλλω (skállō, to stir up, hoe). However, Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin in view of the suffix common to other animal names, such as δρύοψ (drúops), κόρνοψ (kórnops), κώνωψ (kṓnōps) and πάρνοψ (párnops).
