Etymology

According to Beekes, this word cannot be separated from σκιμβός (skimbós, lame) and the variation α/ι as well as the derivatives with "-υκ-" and "-αλ-" point to a Pre-Greek origin. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱamb- (bent, crooked).
