From Ottoman Turkish چنگانه, چنكانه (çingane, çingene), from Persian چنگانه (čengâna), likely ultimately from Ancient Greek ἀθίγγανος (athínganos). Compare the etymological script τσιγγούνης (tsingoúnis) after τσιγγάνος (tsingános, Gypsy) and αθίγγανος (athínganos), described as a repatriated term by some dictionaries.[2]
