Learned borrowing from French hypertrophie,[1] a French-coined term adopted into Greek, equivalent to υπερ- (yper-, over, hyper-) +‎ τροφ(ή) (trof(í), food, nourishment) +‎ -ία (-ía). First attested 1856.[2]
