editInherited from Byzantine Greek χαμόμηλον (khamómēlon), from Koine Greek χαμαίμηλον (khamaímēlon), from χαμαί (khamaí, “on the ground”) (> χάμ(ω) (chám(o)) + -ο- (-o-) > χαμό- (chamó-) + μῆλον (mêlon, “fruit, apple”).[1] Compare to χαμομήλι (chamomíli).
