From Proto-Iranian *hwa- (self-),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swa- (self-), from Proto-Indo-European *swe- (self-), from Proto-Indo-European *swé (self (reflexive pronoun)). Compare Avestan 𐬓𐬀 (xᵛa, self, oneself), Old Persian 𐎢𐎺 (u-v /⁠⁠ʰuva⁠/). Cognate of Sanskrit स्व (sva, his/her own, of self).
