ϩⲓⲙⲏⲣ
Coptic
editEtymology
editUltimately from Egyptian
(ḥr, “on”) + mrw. The interpretation of mrw is unclear; Černý considers it to be a variant of
(mrw, “desert”), while Vycichl equates it with
(mrw), a variant form of
(mryt, “riverbank, quay, harbor”), which fits better with the Coptic evidence semantically but perhaps not phonetically. By surface analysis, ϩⲓ- (hi-, “on”) + ⲙⲏⲣ (mēr, “(opposite) shore”).
