- Katyn, Katyń (a town in Smolensk Oblast, near Belarus). Located not far from the Gnezdovo archaeological site. The forest of Katyn is primarily known as the place of executions made by GPU and NKVD, such as the massacre of several thousands Polish officers in 1940.
