Etymology

edit

Borrowed from Classical Persian مِصْر (miṣr /misr/), from Arabic مِصْرُ (miṣru, Egypt, definite nominative).

Paragogic vowel of the second syllable had become back -ы- (-y-) under the influence of Arabic emphatic consonant ـصـ (-ṣ-). Then it harmonised the vowel of the first syllable.

Compare also Bashkir Мысыр (Mısır), Turkish Mısır, etc.
