Etymology

edit

Borrowed from Uzbek Chimkent.

Pronunciation

edit

Proper noun

edit

Чимке́нт (Čimkéntm inan (genitive Чимке́нта, relational adjective чимке́нтский)

  1. (archaic) Shymkent (old name used before 8 September 1992)
    Synonym: Шымке́нт (Šymként)

Usage notes

edit

The city has been renamed Шымке́нт (Šymként) on 8 September 1992. The new form was reborrowed from Kazakh Шымкент (Şymkent), violating the rules of Russian orthography, which state that the sound IPA(key): [ɨ] should always be written with the letter и (i) if it follows ш (š) or ж (ž). For this reason, Russian-language media outside of Kazakhstan prefer to use the older form Чимке́нт (Čimként).
