Etymology edit

Borrowed from Kazakh Шымкент (Şymkent). Replaced Чимке́нт (Čimként) from 8 September 1992.

Pronunciation edit

Proper noun edit

Шымке́нт (Šymkéntm inan (genitive Шымке́нта, relational adjective шымке́нтский)

  1. Shymkent
    Он в Шымке́нт е́дет на по́езде.
On v Šymként jédet na pójezde.
He is going to Shymkent by train.

Usage notes edit

The modern standard form Шымке́нт (Šymként), borrowed directly from Kazakh, goes against the rules of Russian orthography, which state that the sound IPA(key): [ɨ] should always be written with the letter и (i) if it follows ш (š) or ж (ž). For this reason, Russian-language media outside of Kazakhstan prefer to use the older form Чимке́нт (Čimként).
