Etymology

edit

Likely from Proto-Finno-Ugric *aŋta- (to open). Compare Finnish avata, Livonian ovātõ, Northern Mansi [script needed] (āŋkwi, to open, to take off, to skin) (both from *aŋa-).

Moksha афтомс (aftoms, to set a trap, to cast a net) may be from the Uralic root *ëkta- (to hang up, to set up a trap).
