Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *äšťəms ~ *aštəms. Ultimately possibly connected to Proto-Mordvinic *äźə-, from Proto-Uralic *ëśe- (to exist, be located). Compare also dialectal Erzya eščems and aštoms (to live).[1]
